Ok ladies, I know we are all different, but my husband and I are thinking of trying to get pregnant. It has been 20 years since my colectomy and 19 since my j-pouch was created. I am still impressed by the continued improvement in my overall health through the years. That said, I am anxious about putting my body through the stress of a pregnancy. We would have to use IVF because of my internal scarring. The doctors I have spoken with are are upbeat about it and seem to think that it could "be fine," but I want to know what the actual experience might be like from people who have lived through it.

So, here are a few questions:

I am one of those people who often has to lie down on my belly to expel gas. How did this work when you were pregnant?

How often did you really end up needing to go to the bathroom/day, especially at the end?

Did you have any leaking and if so how often?

I had the surgery long ago, along with several complications that led to extra surgeries, so I have some very big and deep (obviously) scaring. How did your scars respond both during the pregnancy and afterward? (I can imagine that they will stretch for the baby, but what happens afterward?)

I had two hernia repairs after my take down (at the site of my ostomy), the second time they put in some "fabric" to help to muscle knit together. Has anyone else had a pregnancy with this kind of fabric in them? Was it alright?

I appreciate anyone taking the time to answer any of these questions. Thanks!

hi ellie

I have had one baby 2 years ago.
Scars were fine. you wouldn't be able to lie on your stomach as it's too uncomfortable. i used to sleep on mine but don't any more. I had no problems with my pouch first time round and don't remember increasing my frequency. however this time my guts are not so good and it's increased twice fold to about 10 times. I had no leakages either. Keep doing pelvic floor exercises. I also had IVF both times. I am also having a section again.
good luck-it's worth it.

I can't answer all your questions, but here is my experience:

1. I was able to sleep on my stomach til around 20 weeks as I'm a stomach sleeper. After that, I did all side sleeping, but positioned myself with pillows so I was still kind of on my stomach.
2. At the end I was going all the time, but I had/have chronic pouchitis and my meds weren't working so well in the end after being on them so long. Unisom at night really helps though in the 3rd trimester so you aren't waking up with every urge to go.
3. I never had leakage.
4. I had no issues with my scars and they look basically the same pre-baby as post-baby. I did feel tugging around my old ostomy site and at times, it felt like it was going to split open, but it was just fine. I got a tiny, tiny stretch mark right above my ostomy scar literally 3 days before my son was born. But that was it.
5. I don't have any experience with hernias, sorry.
