I have a question about juices for an obstruction that is more likely a "pseudo obstruction." I am waiting for a scope of my pouch scheduled 2 weeks out and, after that a follow up consultation at Mayo Rochester if needed. Meanwhile, I have miserable IPS symptoms of massive amounts of gas, bloating, distention, a "feeling of being backed up, and on and off abdominal pain. I have no fever or blood. I completed a Small Bowel Follow Through Study and the radiologist said he could see inflammation but no sign of serious narrowing in the bowel. So, the scope is the next step. I feel discouraged and frustrated with the symptoms and with the long wait for a scope to find out what is going on. For much of the last month I have managed by sticking to a low sugar/low carb diet and staying well hydrated. In fact, I mostly stick to a liquid/soft food diet including lactose free milk products like yogurt and Ensure, and eating no fruits, veggies, or grains, not even the more processed oatmeals or cream of rice. I am just trying to reduce food for the bad bacteria I assume has taken up residence in my gut. So my question is this: Typically fruit juices like apple and grape juice are recommended to ease blockages but if you know, or at least suspect that your blockage has more to do with pouchitis/SIBO, or other inflammation disease processes, would it be better to stay away from these juices because of the high sugar content? What do you think?

I have IPS and a Mayo GI and he has never restricted my diet so I don't know if this is going to help you. I've had several small bowel studies since receiving my pouch 3.5 years ago and the last was after a partial obstruction. The local radiologist noted that it took longer, 2 hours, than the previous year for the water like barium fluid (water going through an empty small intestine) to make it through my small bowel and that was all. I thought 2.5 hours versus half and hour was a big deal but my surgeon said that partial obstructions may come up from time to time and basically I'd have to live with it! I have a copy of both studies and looked at both on my PC and there are no twists, kinks, narrow places or any swelling that I could see by eye. That was good news and that was also what they were looking for.

I too went to a softer more liquid diet for a long time but never cut out fruits as I have them in protein smoothies made with a plant based protein powder and almond milk. I eat a low lactose diet but am not opposed to ice cream here or there Smiler I think a sugar free diet is probably the best way to go. I still eat bananas and am back to eating pasta and breads and haven't had any further blockage problems the last 6 months.

I hope things work well and think you had a scare or scares similar to mine.

I forgot to mention that I have IPS too but have more of a problem with abdominal pain than gas, bloating and never feel backed up as my IPS symptoms are more BM's as it gets worse. My treatment plan includes up to 8 Loperamide a day to slow things down as prescribed by my GI. This is another reason why I eat bananas, pasta and bread.
