Hello - I've had my j-pouch for 9 years and had 5-6 bouts of pouchitis, usually right before a trip. Over the years I've been prescribed cipro or flagyl; both have been effective, although the first time my (former) doctor left me on cipro a long time (years) and I got C-diff.  This time I'd like to try a probiotic, to see if I can prevent more pouchitis or another C-diff infection. Does anyone have a current recommendation? I found a lot of posts about probiotics on this site, but most are many years old.  I found this current meta-analysis article:

https://www.researchgate.net/p...n_ulcerative_colitis

It shows that in small studies, VSL #3 is significantly effective in preventing pouchitis. However, VSL #3 is way too expensive for me; I read that Visbiome is similar, but it's also very expensive. Also, I'd really like a shelf-stable product so I can travel with it. I will appreciate any advice! Thank you!

Those are the main ones I know of. My main bit of advice when shopping around for them would be look at the cost per billion. VSL and Visibiome are expensive, but actually much cheaper than many others if measured by the quantity of bacteria in them. 450 billion. I looked around at many other cheaper brands that actually worked out way more expensive on a $ per billion basis.  Saying that I can't say I noticed probiotics making a huge difference for me, so stopped them.

Hi,

Ive been taking VSL#3 for several years. 2 a day. It is expensive. My Dr used to give me samples and coupons. If you go to their website, the more you order the cheaper it is.

It has really helped me a lot. I’m afraid not to take it at this point.

All the best to you

Scott F told me in the past that his insurance has covered VSL, maybe talk to Scott F on how you can get insurance to cover it.
