Hi Everyone, have had a J pouch since 1992 due to UC. Most of these years have been great but last few have been very painful resulting in being chained to the toilet most days despite medication. Also had 4 x adhesion surgery in last two years. My specialist has recommended reversal due to ongoing pain and frequency. My question is have any long term J pouchers(20 years+)had successful reversal to the illeostomy. I really cant remember what the illeo was like as it was 23 years ago, but I didnt really like it, I hated the paste and it was very time consuming, perhaps there have been improvements in the appliances since then, I hope so!!

My surgeon said during one of the adhesion surgeries that my bowel was enlarged and pink, which makes me worried whether reversal would be successful. Or if this is how the bowel ends up after 20 odd years with the J pouch. The surgeon hasn't commented on whether it would effect going back to the illeo, I see him in two weeks and will ask him.

Hope you can give me any advice,

Thanks, Heather

I had J Pouch in 1994, lived with pouchitis for about 18 years.  Frequency and pain became unbearable and in 2014 had reversal to permanent ileostomy.  It took me about about 1 year to adapt.  I also had ileostomy (temporary) in 1992 and the products have dramatically improved since then.  It's a permanent and very serious decision to make, not to be taken lightly.   It has changed my life, I waited too long to have the reversal.

Thanks Bunny Lady, yes it is a serious decision, but the pain the J pouch, or rather the rectal area is causing makes me want to rip it all out right now. If the cause of the pain can't be rectified then i'm reversing, real sick of all this drama after years of pain.

Its great to hear the products have improved!!! I think like you that I have waited too long for reversal, putting off going back to the illeo, but unless I get some good answers next week from my specialist I want to be reversed and get rid of the pain!!
