I have been pretty lucky, as have had my S pouch since 2001, and have had only minor issues with partial blockages. I was hospitalized last October (on vacation), with a partial blockage (due to some really fibrous lettuce that I shouldn’t have eaten). It cleared with a NG tube and gastrograffin in about 24 hrs. Since then I have had a couple of smaller occurrences that I have managed to get thru with lots of water, simethicone, heating pad, and walking around in the house. I stay pretty well hydrated most of the time, and I am careful about what I eat — most of the time. Is there anything else you can do/take, if you suspect it is happening? Thanks, Vickie

Prevention of blockages is definitely my expertise
Fiber use to bother me very much; I discovered recently that drinking water: before, during, and after every meal definitely helps prevent blockages, that keeps things moving to the tea!! Everything comes out like a fountain doing it like that; drink water: before, during, and after every meal.
Chew Chew Chew! Take your time eating and chew very thorough!!! A lot of ostomates follow all of this advice and it helps very well!!!
MOVE MOVE MOVE Around, that helps keep things moving around too
I suffered horribly from blockages for over two years-I just had surgery for it. In the meantime, mid-block I tried these things:
1. drink a bottle of coke (if the blockage is food related). The acid in it sometimes breaks down chunks of food.
2. If approved by your doctor, try taking the stuff you drink for colonoscopy with tons of fluid, it might wash everything out (but only if approved by your doctor, as if the blockage isn't food related, this can make things worse....!)
Prevention really is better, so eat a low residue diet (which i get, really sucks long term as it isn't very delicious......)
Good luck, blockages are the worst
I have had blockage happen twice. It is not fun. After the first time, I now do vigorous, deep abdominal massage when I suspected a blockage. It seems to really help. I agree with chewing food well and slowly. No more carrot chunks for me, but I do eat salads and food that is more fibrous.

Whenever I get fully constipated, I drink 2 bottles of magnesium citrate and it clears me up for constipation. I agree with that you said about getting doctors advice about a blockage, definitely!
