Hi, I have a few questions concerning my j-pouch and pregnancy.
At age 14 i was diagnosed with UC. From then until age 18 I was in and out of the hospital due to the disease, and finally at age 18 I decided to have my colon removed and a j-pouch formed. I am now 20, and am 7 weeks pregnant. I had to travel to a different town to have all my surgeries done, and now that I am no longer on my parents insurance, and I am on medicade, I am worried the drs here won't know what to do. I feel lost and hopeless and very very scared.
Any advice or words of encouragement?
Thank you

Kaitlin,
I was terrified when I first got pregnant even though it was totally planned. I won't say it was a super comfortable pregnancy and my attempt at natural childbirth ended in a non-emergency C-section after labor didn't progress. All that said, I can say that having my son was the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me and he was born completely healthy. I was fine after a bit of recovery. I will say that it did help having knowledgable doctors. Can you see the same OBGYN or docs in the same practice on your plan? Maybe your surgeon can communicate with the place you will have your baby to help them support you?

It is great that you are thinking of your health and medical care this early in your pregnancy. For me, the C-section was nothing compared to my surgeries. I wish I'd just done that to begin with and skipped the labor. Smiler There are some risks with vaginal delivery for us j pouches, so it was probably for the best in the long run. Not saying what you should do, but it's a good question to ask. You may also want to start rallying friends and family to give you all the support they can. Not because you will be different than other moms, but because you will be like other moms...exhausted and craving a shower, a nap or a real conversation.

I can also say that holding and taking care of your own baby is like nothing else on this earth. So great!

Hope you let us know how you are doing. Hang in there!

Pregnancy is an exciting and scary time!

Is all ok with your j-pouch? If so, I don't think you need to be anxious. The OB will handle all your prenatal care. In my case, I was at a regular OB and wasn't even considered high risk or anything. At some points in the pregnancy, I was having some issues with pouchitis and fistulas, so my surgeon had to handle those issues and medications, but the OB just handled the pregnancy.

I too delivered in a new state, far away from my original surgeon. There were two OBs there for my c-section plus a general surgeon, just in case (and he had nothing to do! He talked finances with the nurses Smiler. But I was told my surgeon that the uterus is so far in front of the j-pouch, you don't need to worry about a c-section being anywhere near your pouch. My surgeon didn't want me to go in labor at all, so I was scheduled for the every end of week 38. I never went into labor.

I felt so good being pregnant, especially once I got over the anxieties I had. Try to enjoy amazing journey of pregnancy! Take good care of yourself and stay healthy!
