I have been dealing with chronic pouchitis for at least 5 years or more now. I have been given antibiotics for the most part. I am trying a new doctor because I can't get in to the Mayo Clinic to see the doctor I want to see (insurance issues) so, I just had an exam. (Moved to Florida 2 years ago) The report says "pouchitis" which of course I knew that and the doctor was totally shocked to hear that I have been using antibiotics for the pouch infections. Now I just sent a message to tell them I am getting worse, can you please prescribe something and what did I get back? "I am sorry to hear you are feeling worse, but unfortunately, you have to wait to see your doctor so please keep your appointment. I doubt that you have pouchitis and this infection could be coming from something else in your body." WHAT??? I have had my pouch since 2010 and have had no real problems but this and some cuffitis issues. OK, I do know my body and I know what the heck I am talking about. Here's another thing I want to explain; the doctor that did my pouch exam was not the same doctor who I am seeing so, because of that, I have to wait until the appointment. Are you serious?? I am so upset right now. I want to be patient and wait but I am about to head back to North Carolina just so I can see my doctor there. Mayo Clinic is a pain to get into and my insurance will not cover it as of now. I didn't push hard enough I guess with that either. Please someone tell me that I am making sense here? I am concerned and frustrated, not to mention annoyed and hurting. (I am planning on trying some other things while I wait and lucky for me I do have some antibiotics I can take for now)

seems like something could be triggering your immune system to react in that way, maybe an unknown allergy or even a physical issue with the pouch itself. if the latter it can be found through a dye test
I am so sorry you’re having all these problems. Would your Doc in North Carolina call in a RX for you? To hold you over til you see the new Doc. I always keep some antibiotics on hand, just in case I need them until I can get in touch with my GI Doc.
If all else fails go to the ER
Best of luck to you
It might be a good idea to have some literature available to share with the new doctor that will educate on the treatment of pouchitis, if they seem truly shocked about your antibiotic use.
Thank you all, yes, I do have an RX that I have kept on hand and my NC doctor recently refilled it. You are exactly right, so good to have on hand. I have started it again so I could get some relief.
Yes, I do plan to bring some things I found on here especially the one that was posted at the beginning so we see it first with that wonderful article. I do plan to share that. It's frustrating to me that several GI doctors don't know about this. This is the second GI doctor I have tried in this area. Again, many thanks for the advice. I love this page. I have learned so much from going on here!
