I've been dealing with an nasty case of pouchitis. I'm going to the bathroom 30-50 times a day, straight bile, and having tons of cramping, especially at night that makes me nearly come off the bed in reaction to the pain. It's been simmering for at least 3 weeks, but I wasn't aware of what the issue was until Friday of last week. My colorectal surgeon is out of town, but his nurse practitioner prescribed flagyl 250 mg 3 times a day for 7 days with a refill if it doesn't clear up. I don't have a GI any longer because my GI from my UC days was not comfortable treating me with a jpouch because he doesn't see them often and doesn't feel he can offer me the best of care.
I ended up in the ER last night with dehydration. No one there had ever heard for a jpouch, but to their credit, the. Dr on duty asked what they normally do for dehydration for me. They ended up giving me 3 bags of fluid, phenergen for nausea and Bentyl to help with the cramping. The bentyl did nothing to help with the cramping, so after 3 hours, they ended up giving me dilaudid. That obviously helped.
So I called my surgeons office back today to let them know what was going on and what do we do next. I'm so frustrated by their response. You need to be evaluated by a GAstroenterologist and it could take a while to get you into one. In the meantime, don't take Imodium. I was given no option for cramping pain, absolutely no hope. I'm not ok with this.
Anybody ever been in the situation and have any advice or suggestions?
