Anyone ever measure their pouch volume? I know there must be variation between individuals though I’m sure most fit into a range. I just wonder as some go 3x whereas others so 10x per day. Do those who go 3x have much larger BMs and those who go 12x only partially empty? Diet of course plays a role too but most of us will be getting somewhere between 1500 and 3000 Cals/day. Maybe I’ll measure volume of output on a slow day vs more active day and see if it’s actually the same. I mean, how do you know if your completely emptying if you don’t know how much it holds? Very interesting.

Pouch capacity varies a lot, but it’s not like filling a bucket with water. Because the pouch is continent it will continue to stretch (ultimately with increasing discomfort) pretty much until a decision is made to empty it, for the various reasons people decide that it’s time. Diet plays a role in that varying diets can produce quite different amounts of residue (e.g. vegetarian vs. a low-residue diet). Stool produced by a colon has an extraordinary amount of bacteria (about 30%) by volume, but I don’t know the (presumably much smaller) fraction for J-pouch output. An inflamed J-pouch will feel like it needs to be emptied at a much lower volume than a healthy pouch. So: YMMV
