Hi all,

I had a sub-total colectomy in Nov. 2011. In about 3 weeks I am going in for my 2nd (and hopefully last) surgery where they will create the pouch and hook it up. My surgeon would not confirm whether she would be able to do it all in the one surgery or if I'll need a third. She'll decide once she gets in.

I am only going for my pre-op appt 3 days before my surgery.

Is there anything I should know to prep for the surgery? What about after the surgery? What advice do you have that you found helpful?

I am really nervous. I was so sick with my first surgery that I was looking forward it. With this one, I am feeling great with the bag (Other than my constantly itching skin), and am worried that I am going to feel badly again afterward.

Any words of wisdom?

Hi,

Although I am not a veteran of the jpouch I am using mine and pretty well, at least I think so. I had a two part surgery w/ 3 months in between. I found the recovery after the first to be rather difficult and my bag and I battled constantly through the whole thing. I am 2 1/2 weeks post takedown and pretty happy with the results. The first week was tough and I dealt with butt burn, being tired and feeling unsure when I left the house but now I am comfortable. I was able to go into work a few days this week and find I can hold it, make it to the bathroom and not feel afraid.

Everyone will heal differently and find they face their own challenges as they go but all in all I know it is working for me.

Good luck in your new adventure and remember you haven't used you bottom for poop for a long while and it will be a challenge to use it again. The important thing is to not give up. Good luck and happy holidays!
