Has anyone had problems eating potato chips? I love them and my body craves the salt at times but the last couple of times I ate them I got loose stools and butt burn. I didn't think to attribute it to the chips because after all they are just fat. salt and potatoes right? All of which I eat in abundance in other foods without issue.

Today I did some research and discovered that they are loaded with an artificial fat called Olestra which causes gas, bloating, diarrhea and loose stools especially in people with sensitive digestive tracts. The brand that I was eating is apparently notorious for having a lot of the stuff in them. So they are off my list as of today. Too bad. I love chips.

I was eating "low fat" chips, so I jumped to conclusions and made the assumption but when I retrieved the bag from the trash I discovered that the label did not list Olestra or Olean as an ingredient.
Upon further investigation, I discovered that Olestra (Olean) was banned from products sold in Canada.

So, I have no idea what caused my set-back which has kept me in the BR continuously for the past 24 hours. It still appears to be related to the chips but obviously not for the reason I thought. Back to the drawing board. ~ alas~
If it was just a 24 hour thing, it could easily be a random blip or attributable to something else you ate. Chips are a 100% safe food for me that usually gives me semi-solid stools.

It's possible that they could be too much fat. I wouldn't write them off just yet. If the fat is too much, try pretzels instead -- still salty, still a bulk/safe food for most pouchers.
Try another brand of potato chips. Also, see if you experience symptoms if you just eat a few chips.....difficult, I know. If they sit right with you, gradually increase the amount you eat. Just a suggestion. I do eat some foods with the effect you describe. I know it is short lived (until the culprit food is out of me) and so I bite the bullet and enjoy myself....for awhile, anyway!
Kathy, I eat UTZ potato chips - the only ingredients are oil (cottonseed - not the best - oh well,) potatoes and salt and they are thinner than other chips. They actually help to thicken my output. However, their dark russet potato chips I am unable to eat. I've tried them several times because they're delicious and I wanted to make sure that they were what was causing the problem. I felt like I was pooping shards of glass each time Eeker. If you really love chips, try different kinds of those with the least number of and purest ingredients.
