So I was admitted to the hospital again last weekend for an obstruction (been getting them a lot lately), as well as for the fact that my electrolytes were really out of whack. The last few times, my potassium and magnesium have been critically low (calcium was this time too), and I'm wondering what everyone does to maintain potassium intake. A normal person is supposed to get 4700mg per day, but since I don't absorb everything due to the pouch, I think I should try for a bit more. I also strength train regularly, and it's necessary for muscles. I eat bananas, drink coconut water, etc, but am wondering what else I can do. Most of the supplements I've seen only supply 3% of the RDA for potassium, so I don't think that's going to completely solve the problem. I haven't really experimented much with chia seeds, and I understand those have a decent amount of potassium in them as well. Any other ideas? Foods that would be good, supplements, etc? Much appreciated!

Hi Michaela,
Well outside of bananas you could try steamed potatoes, tomatoes in all forms other than cooked...and if I am not wrong many dried fruits (dates, apricots, prunes, cranberries...) contain loads of essential minerals like magnesium, iron, calcium etc...not to mention all of the nuts that also are full of goodies (not sure at all if they contain any potassium).
Although I am rusty on this check out some of the less often used green, leafy veggies like kale, spinach, watercrest...
If you don't like or can't eat them normally then blend them into a smoothie...
