Hi there, my husband had his takedown on 5/2 and remarkably, he was out of the hospital by 5/4. He was keeping foods down and he had a bowel movement right away on day 3.

So far, everything has seemingly gone well. Except for these mind numbing pains he gets. The pain is intense for maybe 10-15 seconds and then it subsides and he feels fine again. Most of the time after the pain we can hear gurgling and things moving through his intestines. Upon doing some research, I am guessing this is gas pain?

His doctor gave him hydrocodone with acetaminophen for the pain but warned him that it could cause constipation. He doesn't take them very often because we're not convinced they are actually working? But oddly enough he's not actually going to the bathroom all that much.

His tummy is a bit bloated but not terribly... and we can hear the gas inside him but it never seems to come out? His pouch is working and he is having movements but not nearly as many as all the stories I read. I heard on the boards that the normal is like 15-20 times a day but his is much much lower. The first and second day he was doing maybe 7-8 times but today he's only actually gone about 3 or 4 times. He's not having urgency problems and the stool that is coming out is actually a mixture of solid poo and liquid at the same time. He told me he also seems to have to push quite hard and really focus on what he's doing to get stuff to come out.

He doesn't have a huge appetite yet. But I am trying to make sure he's eating something at least 3 times a day and drinking water. Could the pain pills be making him constipated? I also got him some Gas-X but I'm not sure if that is helping either.

Will this pain eventually subside on its own or is he always going to have these gas pains? And how come he doesn't actually seem to be farting even though we can hear it gurgling around in there?

Thanks!

If his pain left over from the surgery isn't too bad anymore I would discontinue the pain meds. They can really mess with the system. But, if he's too uncomfortable without them then he should take them. No sense in being in pain if he doesn't have to. I have a high pain tolerance so I didn't want to take the pain meds after takedown. I only took them for the time I was in the hospital.

What you are describing all sounds totally normal post takedown. I remember the gas pains being pretty intense for about a week or so then they slowly diminished. My insides were really noisy too. They still can be noisy now..that's just part of the package. It will calm down for him.....he's in the healing process. Passing gas will become easier too but I usually have to be sitting or lying down.
Sounds about right.

I'm still gurgley sounding depending on what I eat. Everyone's frequency is different. 7-8 was normal to me for a long time; now, it's more like 3/4-6.

I'm like Marianne, too. Can only pass gas sitting, lying down, or on the toilet. I haven't farted in a standing position in over 20 year. Smiler

It IS a bit different to go with a pouch. I have to use my abs a lot, to go, especially when things are thicker. When I had a C section, it took me a few days to be able to easily go again, because I really use my belly muscles a lot.
Thanks guys... he feels better today than he did yesterday. And I'm amazed also that he slept through the entire night last night and never had to get up to empty his pouch. This is day 5 and I can't believe how well he is adapting and how things are going. I of course am super thrilled as its a blessing since his first procedure almost killed him. Maybe this is just good karma. Smiler
Well good news, the pain has gone away and I'm simply flabbergasted that he is basically "normal" now. His stool is pretty thick most of time time and he's going maybe 3-4 times a day? He hasn't had any problems with leaks at all and he has been sleeping through the night since I brought him home from the hospital.

It was pretty funny when he was having all these gas pains it just seemed like we could hear it moving around and causing him pain but he wasn't actually letting any gas out.... well, before bed like 3 or 4 days ago he went to the bathroom and it was fricken hilarious... he just started farting and didn't stop for like 3 minutes. I couldn't stop laughing and he made jokes that he was about to blast off into space.

I'm just so happy to have my husband safe and well ... it is just the most amazing relief off my heart to know what he has gone through and what I've gone through to know now he's so much better. I just can't stop gushing about it. Smiler

And if I hadn't had the support of people on the forums and all the tricks and ins and outs that I learned here (cause the damn doctors don't tell you this stuff), I don't think I woulda got through it.
I had that exact pain for 4 months after surgery. It would stop me on my tracks but then go away. Take it month by month maybe even write down how he feels bc he will be shocked how much better he will feel 1 month in 3 months then 6 and so on. I'm 9 months out and ( knock on wood) the pouch is doing well! I can't believe what a difference a month can make. Hang in there Smiler
I'm so glad he is doing well. I also had all that pain, and noise. It was unbearable at times. I actually had some complications that left me unable to gain weight, so I had to drink all the weight gain drinks, which made the gas 10xs worse. I know this sounds weird, but if he ever can't pass it and it hurts..tell him to lay on his back and put his legs in the air (like he's doing a bike pedaling exercise). It has saved my life at times (I can't believe I'm saying that). It truly works, and in a way that won't create a mess (if you know what I mean).
But, again...I'm so happy that he is getting through!
Thanks Laurie!

He is actually great now... no pain at all now and going about 3-4 times a day. What complications did you have? That certainly doesn't sound fun.

His first surgery was a horrible nightmare because he almost died from septic shock. We now know that one of his staples came loose on his j-pouch and I guess a bunch of intestinal stuff leaked into his abdomen. He stayed in the hospital for almost a month and then I had to give him constant home care for his drains and PICC line antibiotics... it was terrible! Took him about 2.5 months to get well again and then that's when we found the hole in his j-pouch and put two and two together. So, we had to wait almost 6 months for him to have his takedown to let the pouch heal. So, having things go really well now is a blessing. Smiler
I am so happy for you truly! That is an amazing story. He deserves an easy ride this time...and I'd say 3-4 times is amazing! I still go 8-10, but it's not a big deal at all!!!! To answer your question....I had a blood clot in my abdomen. Had HORRIBLE pain (which, when I initially read your post, I thought of). But...it got worse, not better...brought myself to the ER (thank g-d) and found out I had it. Could have died I guess. I was 89lbs and emaciated by the end of it all. My adrenal glands were failing too because of the drop in Predisone too quickly. Bad news! Really tough on my husband. We had a 3 year old at the time. But, happy and healthy now. I wish you guys the best...good luck with it all! He'll be so happy he did it.
