My son is 2 days past stage 1.  They left some rectum and he just had some significant discharge (poo, blood , mucus).  He said he strained a bit and still does not feel relieved (the same horrible feeling pre- surgery).  He is very scared and crying,  "I don't feel relieved", "I went through this for nothing".  Any comforting words I can give him?  Is this normal?  Will this feeling pass once all the post surgical stuff come out?

stage 1 of 2 or 3 stages? I had 2 step jpouch surgery 29 years ago, and personally I don't recall any discharge while I had my ileo for 4 months awaiting takedown. but I have observed that apparently this is absolutely normal. 2 days post surgery his rectum is likely still inflamed from prior to colectomy. now that stool will pass via the stoma, the rectum will eventually get to rest and over time the discharge will slow and I suspect the incomplete relief will also. chalk it up to abdominal swelling from surgery. this is very early days, it will get better. it will never be like before when he had a non diseased colon but it will be better than having a diseased colon.

I had a k pouch done in 2+ steps and had horrid discharge pouring out of me...at first it was bloody (very normal) then it slowly turned into a slightly coloured discharge that had a strong smell (not plesant)...I had cramping as it pushed it all out...all of that is very normal...not plesant but not permanent either.

Once the pouch is created and he is hooked up he will be fine...this is the akward stage...takes a while but he will feel better as days go by and his 'end of line' heals up.

Impatience is the danger right now...he is going to be very emotional due to the post op stress, the anesthetic reaction, the pain  pain meds etc...take it in stride...reassure him but be ready for tears (very healthy).

I freaked out the first few days after my colectomy.  No one told me that I'd still be having some UC symptoms because my rectum was still in place.  I had mucus discharge a few times a day.   It did get better each day after I got out of the hospital.

My surgeon told me that I could use a suppository like Canasa to help the UC symptoms in my rectum.

I hope that your son feels better soon.
