In the last month or two I have had an increase of what feels like pelvic pressure. And pain in the urinary and pelvic area. I know that I am not supposed to strain but my J-Pouch does not seem to want to empty unless I encourage it. Today I went to the bathroom and realized that the left side of my anus is round and swollen and I am concerned this may be the beginning of a prolapse. I have had 11 surgeries in the last two years and I'm hoping this is just inflammation of some sort - perhaps at the cuff or area where the J-Pouch was connected to the anus. It is sore and hurts to put any pressure on it. Does this sound like prolapse? What else could it be?

Prolapse is not very common, and would more likely be protruding all the way around.

What is more likely (and quite common) is a perianal abscess. When it is just beginning it is just tender to touch. As it progresses, it becomes extremely painful, and there is little doubt. Start taking warm sitz baths (as often as you have time for) and call your doctor as soon as you can.

It should be treated as soon as possible to avoid it causing a fistula. If it is a perirectal abscess, it is deeper in the tissues and takes a little longer to develop. Plus, the pain is less localized.
