Hi there...I had my jpouch surgery about 5 years ago and been relatively healthy since. In August, I was having blood in stool and was diagnosed with inflammation of the remaining part of my colon. My surgeon put me on canasa suppositories (1000 mg) for one month. I recently had a positive ANA test (as result of recent miscarriage)- could this be from the antibodies from UC? Or the recent flare I had? I am awaiting further test results, and am worried this could be indicative of another autoimmune disease, like Lupus. Please let me know your thoughts, thanks!

Sorry to hear about your recent problems. The thing with ANA is that it's not really specific to what/where the inflammation is, or what your body is attacking. It can be a general inflammation marker. It's also possible to have elevated ANA without any specific pathology, or conversely, to have inflammation without elevated ANA. But since your results were elevated, it's likely your doctor will want to repeat in a few weeks. If they are still high, you may be sent for other testing that can help rule out exactly why the result is elevated and go from there. That being said, cuffitis is inflammation and could certainly be a reason for your results being what they are. Hope you get it sorted soon!
a positive ANA generally doesn't mean much unless you are having SYMPTOMS of other things. A significant portion of the general population has positive ANA and it has nothing to do with autoimmune diseases. I have never heard of a positive ANA being related to UC.

If you are having symptoms - joint pain, etc.. or problems AND have a positive ANA, then your doctor should probably do other autoimmune blood marker tests to rule out specific autoimmune diseases, such as srogrens or rheumatoid arthritis.

As for lupus.. a positive ANA is only one of the 11 factors identified in order to receive a lupus diagnosis. And to get a lupus diagnosis, you need to have 4 out of thte 11 criteria. I believe you would know you had some of these symptoms. So I wouldn't worry about lupus if I was you as you stated you feel relatively healthy. I think most people end up with a ANA blood test after they go to their doctor complaining about symptoms which are lupus like or rheumatoid arthritis like. And then more testing ensues.
good luck.
