Good afternoon,

I've had a J Pouch since 2001 (due to chronic Ulcerative Colitis) and this is only the second time the following has ever happened to me, both times this year:

On Saturday evening I was unable to sleep due to pain in my abdomen,  my wife made me a hot drink and after an hour or so of sitting upright in bed the pain went away. This morning I  started work as normal then soon began to feel quite unwell.  The  pain had  returned and I was nauseous. Having  been sick a few times I now feel considerably better and I'm resting. Hopefully I can get back to work in a few hours time.

I'd very much appreciate please any advice on what could be the cause (just in case I feel poorly again later) and any tips you might have to prevent a recurrence. I suspect mushrooms (although I do chew them well) might be causing some kind of blockage - would that make sense?

The only other time it happened was earlier this year, and again after vomiting everything went back to 'normal' almost instantly, although I was  tired afterwards.

Many thanks in advance for your support.

Usually, a specific food is not the cause of an obstruction. It is more about your intestine moving in a “wrong” way, so that there is a kink or similar. This is caused by adhesions that formed within a few weeks of your surgery. So try not to beat yourself up about what you did or did not eat. Unless you are swallowing without chewing, you are doing fine. The only thing you  can do is to be sure to drink plenty of fluids, stay active, and chew your food.
