I have osteopenia. I was told Prednisone use during the 20 years I had UC was the likely cause. It doesn’t normally show up for someone in their 40s and that is when they first saw it on a bone density scan.
Thanks for reply. I've not taken Prednisone, but apparently I have multiple fractures on my spine and now I'm going to have to have a bone density test. I was just wondering if osteoporosis is quite common in people with UC?
How old are you? Age is a factor as well- so is smoking. Lots of things could be factors as far as how you have lived your life, it also could be genetic and age related.
Hi I've been diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was 27 years old. Thanks to prednisone.
I have it in my hip & spine. Trying my best not to take those awful osteoporosis meds. I go to the osteoporosis clinic at NYU.
I have osteopenia too. It could be my age (almost 51) or genetics, since my Mom has it and so did my Grandma. It could be because I had my kids when in my thirties. I wasn't on Prednisone for very long with UC, just a few weeks, but I do take Budesonide, which can also be considered a steroid, so maybe that is part of the cause. Whatever the case, I now take calcium supplements, Vitamin D3, and do strength training and cardio work to keep the bone density I have from getting smaller. I can't turn back time, but I can sure try to keep if from getting worse.
I also take calcium supplements for my osteopenia.
I am 67 and have osteoporosis. I’ve had some form of it for years. I was on prednisone for many years. Currently, I am on Prolia and had my 6th shot in June. I know it is a controversial drug, but it is my decision to take it. I walk 3 miles a day, yoga 3x a week, take calcium and Vitamin D. I try to be careful in daily activities. Who knows if it was the prednisone or not? Lots of factors influence this condition.
I have a bone density scan next month. I've started taking celtic sea salt instead of table salt, apparently it has all the minerals that our bones are made up of. Found this woman on youtube is very helpful and has given me a lot of hope. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaC1Kmp_ZMc
Sorry to bump this thread, but I just got my DEXA scan results and they're worse. I've moved into full-blown Osteoporosis and I'm kind of freaking out. I'm taking calcium, but I just don't know if I'm absorbing anything. What forms of Calcium are you guys and gals using?
You need to take Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2, I also take co-enzyme q10 and also I use a good sea salt (Celtic or Himalayan pink salt are the best). Weight bearing exercises and walking are essential or your bones won't grow back strong. I chose not to take osteoporosis medication. This is a youtube video I found interesting and helpful.

Thanks! I've got a liquid D & K going, but I'll check out the video.
Also chia seeds and tahini (made from ground sesame seeds) have lots of calcium so I have that every day . I avoid calcium tablets.
I also have osteoporosis I am almost sure that my Ulcerative Colitis and after J-pouch surgery hit me over the top. I am on prolia and it seems to be improving my bones. I take a lot of vitamins, exercise. I am not able to eat everything so that is another factor. I try to just keep myself healthy. I am very thin and can not gain weight. I try to keep myself busy and try to be the best that I can.
