My husband has battled UC for 6.5 years, failed Remicade, Entyvio, and now IV sterioids and Prednisone aren’t working (among trying many other drugs, diets, and vitamins). After being hospitalized twice in the last 30 days, and loosing close to 30 lbs since July, we decided together he’ll have a better quality of life going through with surgery. It’s been so hard to watch a man I always call the “healthiest sick person I know” deteriorate, and I can’t wait for him to get some relief!

He is scheduled for the first of 3 j-pouch surgeries this Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic with Dr. Hermann Kessler. His usual GI doc, Dr. Lashner, set us up with Dr. Kessler and we have just wondering if anyone has experience working with him. So far he seems great, very business-like but still took time to answer our questions and walk us through the process. The hubby’s condition isn’t an emergency, but things have gone downhill quickly so we didn’t have time to do research on who our options are for surgery. That being said though, I’m optimistically confident anyone at the Clinic is a good choice – just soliciting opinions, reviews, etc. if anyone has any!

Mrs. Schmidt,

By now I expect your husband had his surgery at CC! I expect he had great care, as most are very impressed with CC surgeons as well as the ostomy and other nurses who support you after surgery. I truly hope he had that experience and is recuperating comfortably. There is an adjustment period with each step, so be patient and ask specific questions here if needed to aide in his recovery. It's a long haul, but so many have had success and are now living with much better and healthier quality of life! All the best to you both!
