Obstruction

I had a terrible experience couple days ago with a partial obstruction almost to the point where I thought it was turning into a full obstruction and thought I was going to end up in the ER. I waited it out because I've had a couple before but not this bad. It did pass after about 14 hours. My question is that it's two days later and I'm still experiencing sharp pains in the area where the obstruction was. I don't remember the last time the pains and cramps lasting this long but like I said it wasn't as bad the last times. I have also experienced alot of loud stomach noises and last night had a bout of diarrhea with alot of gas. Is this normal to still be feeling these pains and other symptoms a couple days after the obstruction or should I be worried about something else?

If you think you have a bowel obstruction, I am going to advise you what my doctor advised me to do. Go to the ER ASAP.

I have had two bowel obstructions. The first one in 1999, about 5 years after my 3rd take down surgery. Its the worst pain I have ever had and if I did not go to the ER, I would have been dead.

The 2nd one I had was in 2006 and again, I drove myself to the ER. This was not as bad as the first one and they put me on complete bowel rest for 5 days. I was only fed intravenously, not even allowed to drink water. By the 5th day, I was allowed to have a light breakfast to see how my body reacted. Then I was also given a light lunch and everything was OK so I was sent home.

But please, go to the ER and have this checked out immediately.

Sounds like at least a partial obstruction still, or some damage. Time to get it checked out.

I just want to add, though by now I hope you're feeling better, but following a blockage, there is often continued pain. My doctor explained that the continual motion of your intestines keeps on pushing and pounding the tissue during blockage. That can make it swell, and feel bruised. I found it lasted several days with long, severe blockage, and just one day with a shorter (6-10 hour) blockage. Not sure that is the pain you're having, but blockages do cause residual pain.

I also have bowel obstructions that send me to the ER. I've had 3 in the last two months! My last CT scan showed lots of adhesions which I understand can attach the intestines to the bowel wall. Maybe this is the pain you are feeling.
