Hi,

I was to have a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago because of fibroids, but my surgeon was unable to do surgery because of severe adhesions. I have now been advised by a colorectal surgeon that to have hysterectomy could have serious complication to my jpouch. Has anyone had a hysterectomy in which the jpouch was damaged? I don't know what to do. I'm in pain acute to fibroids, but afraid of getting hysterectomy and ending up having a bag.

So sorry that you have to deal with this plus all of the pain...
A couple of quesitons...was it to be open surgery or laporoscopic?
If it was open surgery then I can understand the difficulty in both the problem of cutting through the adhesions and creating more...you may wish to contact a laporoscopic specialist who might be able to do it without opening you up...some will and some will be daunted by the adhesions...
Have they already tried hormone therapy to shrink them?
I am not sure what the U.S. protocol is for this sort of thing but I went through hell, here in France, with my fibroms in the 90's and my surgeon at the time refused to operate me because he knew nothing about k pouches and they scared him to death...so he sent me to a really old (in his 70's) obs-gyn who put me on hormone replacement therapy to shrink them to nothing...
Although he did have to go in due to salpangitis and clean out my falopian tube he did not do much for my ovarian cysts and fibroms...(he only removed the largest ones)...when I woke up he told me that they were putting my ovaries to sleep (!?) for a few yrs to shrink the firoms and that normally they would no longer bother me.
They gave me large doses of progesterone in both pill and gel form...I took the pills and rubbed the gel onto my forearm. Nowadays they have patches for that.
Just some ideas...

TalkingTina,

Have you been assessed as a candidate for uterine artery embolization -- a less invasive for fibroids procedure done by an interventional radiologist? I, too, have multiple fibroids, one of which is huge and becoming necrotic. My GI surgeon told me to avoid more abdominal surgery at all costs, so I was evaluated for UAE, but unfortunately because of the size, location, symptoms of my fibroids was not seen as good candidate for it. My gyno worried about the adhesions as well -- and I can't believe I am facing more surgery again. But maybe UAE would work for you.
I empathize with you, as my fibroids are causing me tremendous pain on certain days. Let us know how you are doing.
