After 3 months of having trouble going to the bathroom and feeling like I wasn't fully evacuating my pouch, a defogram showed my pouch and small intestine had prolapsed. I had surgery on June 6th and my surgeon decided to remove my pouch completely (he said my small intestine had grown somewhat and my pouch had become too stretched out) and just do a straight hook up (he also tacked my small intestine to my abdominal wall). He said the fact that my small intestine had grown somewhat would compensate for not having the pouch anymore. This is a real worry to me because my initial two surgeries resulted in this same hook up. I was going to the bathroom so much that I had two more surgeries to create the pouch and was doing extremely well, until 3 months ago. I saw my GI doctor the other day and he seemed somewhat surprised that my surgeon chose that route (without really putting it into words) and said that hopefully the part of the small intestine that had dilated would stay that way--but there's no guarantees. He said I could need surgery again in the future for either another pouch or a permanent ileostomy. Has anyone else had this problem or know of any positive outcomes with situations similar to mine? Neither my surgeon or GI doc had really seen a case like mine before, so that also adds to my nerves.
