Hi everyone. I have a friend that is about 6 weeks post op. He has a temp ileostomy and is in constant pain. His ostomy bag will be empty for days..no gas..nothing...then he'll be up for 24 hours because after four days it'll finally fill up. I think he has blockages, but his doctor says this is normal. I've had my jpouch for almost 15 years and have my share of "minor" blockages but never have I heard of an empty bag for days at a time! Any advice? Has this happened to anyone? As always, thank you!

Does not sound normal to me. He should probably skip the doctor and get advice from his ostomy nurse. Generally no output for 4-6 hours is a concern, but mainly if you have cramping pain. If the stool was bypassing the ostomy, then he would not be having all that backup that runs constantly once the ostomy is working again. Plus, he'd be having a lot of output from his pouch.

What is he eating? He may have to restrict his diet more until he has the take-down, and hopefully things will improve after that.
