It's been 7 years since takedown and have nightly bowel incontinence--generally just once. Every night During the day, control is fine. But at night I don't wake up until it is too late. It can be more often if I eat much after 630 pm and it doesn't seem to change with diet. I take just loperamide. What are others experiences? Anyone have suggestions? Very frustrating……...

I forgot to mention I take VSL #3
My husband takes imodian(before bed) and he wear the ultra thin overnight pads to bed, just in case.
I take Lomotil at bed time. I also find night time incontinence to be a sign of pouchitis. Have you tried clearing it up with a course of Cipro or Flagyl?
Is the incontinence a new symptom, or have you been experiencing it since take down? If it new, assume it is pouchitis, and get a scrpt for an antibiotic.

Hi Captaink. I've had my jpouch for 16 years and started having problems with nighttime incontinence after a dialation during a scope. I take loperamide before bed and in the middle of the night if I have problems. I do find its more problematic if I eat something that gives me gas, like broccoli or a green salad. And also if I'm really tired and very sound asleep. I do wear a panty liner every night. Well everyday too. A friend told me about a product called a Butterfly. It's a "pad" that fits between your "cheeks" and attaches with adhesive like a panty liner. She said she bought them at Walmart. I haven't tried them yet but plan too.
Not pouchitis. Have had nighttime bowel events since takedown
Well, it sounds like you have sphincter weakness then. They naturally relax some during sleep. For people with a colon and rectum, it allows for gas to escape during sleep. Since our stool is more loose, that is a less than helpful reflex. Imodium is said to improve sphincter tone, so you could increase your evening dose, or even take your entire daily dose in the evening, instead of spread throughout the day. There is a long half life, so there probably would be enough on board during the daytime.
You can have anal manometry tests to diagnose it.

Mrs. P...
I tried the "Butterfly" when I still had my colon, before I finally gave in to using Depends. It was a waste of paper on that kind of "leakage". Ugh. But I have some put away... May get them back out now and try again! Thanks for the reminder!

Captaink I couldn't find your reply to me, but I understand now why you wouldn't want to use my suggestion Lol
I have found co-codamol based painkillers useful to lessen loose bowel movements, especially at night. Obviously be careful not to take too many but for short term use, like on holiday when different foods/water cause issues I find it helps. Might be worth a try.
I took Tincture of Opium at bedtime for many years. Worked for me and no longer take it but still wear a Depends to bed.
Do you know if there is any type of surgery that can fix this? I have the same problem.
I don't know of any that would solve this problem. I'm getting worse e e though I take masive doses of Amodium
I still get it occasionally and I had takedown about 3 months ago. I do not have pouchitis but I did have a mucousectomy.
After my surgery 16 yrs ago , I quit taking immodiom it caused to much liquid to leak out while leaving the stool in. Quit taking it and leaking stopped.
