Wow. I wish I had found this group months ago. Let's see, I was diagnosed with UC back in 2000, originally well controlled with mesalamine. Only a few major flares until fairly recently, but when things got bad, it happened fast. My GI doc always told me I'd know if/when it was time for a colectomy, and boy was he right. I had a total proctocolectomy in September and just had my takedown this past Tuesday. I'm a nurse, which is both a good and bad thing when you're sick. It's so important to be an informed healthcare consumer, but it's also easy to scare the crap  (pun intended) out of yourself. Working in the ER I saw too many IBD patients whose entire lives revolved around their disease and I was terrified of becoming one of "those people". Well, here I am, and I look  forward to moving though this stage of my disease and returning to some semblance of normalcy...which I assume will begin once this butt burn dies down.

Thanks for having me.

Welcome!

Yeah, you can have normalcy, but you just need a new definition of normal. You are right. Once you get over the butt burn, you can have a more normal life. I say that because as long as your butt isn't on fire and you are not incontinent, you can  work with frequency, dietary intolerances, pouchitis, etc., and still be productive. But, if your butt is on fire, you can't concentrate on anything.

hi everyone I'm also new to the group and I also wish I had more info as well. I was diagnosed with UC back in 2010 and my dr who is amazing and one of the best started me on pretisione 60mg was what I was taken but once I started to drop in pills the flare ups were brutal. I had 95% of my colon removed and am living with the jpouch its been rough but I've gotten used to it of course their are many things that I can't enjoy for foods and a lot of cut out that's what's important is knowing what hurts u and what's acceptable I know that sounds hard to believe but it true. I've learned to adjust my life through all this I'm 41 married and have a beautiful baby girl my life' sort off haschanged but I live it everyday like nothing is wrong. Thanks for listening and reading my story.
