What you need is ilex protectant paste; smear it around the Stoma and apply the Stoma appliance on top.
Once ilex has been applied, whilst changing your stoma appliance; leave the ilex adhered to the affected skin for as long as possible, until the ilex begins to peel off by itself, normally in big chunks; allow the skin to heal under the ilex paste.
I found ConvaTec products to be far superior and they tend to look less medical than other brands
With both my end and loop ileostomy, I used a ConvaTec two piece appliance with a Convex mouldable flange with fantastic results.
I've tried every brand available and only ConvaTec appliances provided the security I required; during that time, other than a few manufacturing issues, I never experienced leakage or skin damage whilst using the ConvaTec products.
However, after the creation of my loop ileostomy, I was advised that the ConvaTec products that I'd become accustomed to weren't suitable for use with the loop ilestomy and the Hospital provided product from a brand, which just so happens to have a contract with the Hospital; I also believe the same brand sponsors the Stoma nurse.
I foolishly persevered with such products and as a result, endured constant leakage and the most excruciating painful skin damage imaginable.
Therefore, like yourself, I turned to this very forum and Jan suggested I apply ilex paste to the damaged skin and within 3 days my sore and festering skin had completely healed.
I also reverted to using the ConvaTec products that were supposedly unsuitable; well guess what........ they were more than suitable and I continued to use them until takedown, applying the ilex paste as a precaution; as I didn't want to endure such pain and discomfort ever again.
ilex will provide a few sample sachet prior to purchase but if you emphasise what you're experiencing, stating that a few small samples isn't enough to evaluate the product, they may send a tube of ilex paste for free.
Within the UK, ilex is now available on a NHS prescription.
