So I was reading on here about the FDA re labeling Cipro for cause of nerve damage. To be honest I wasn't even aware of the tendon issues it can cause. I guess I was naive to the fact that I assumed my Doc would tell me about those effects since I had massive reconstructive surgery on my right leg as a child. Body cast and everything. All of my nerves and tendons in my ankle where completely severed except 1. I had zero problems with my leg till I was in my late 20's. During this time they have had no answers as to why it's gotten so bad this fast. I have been on Cipro pretty regularly since I was in my late teens. And for the last 2 years I have had a open ended prescription for it and am supposed to take it whenever I feel like I need it. Cause they just don't know what else they can do. Could this be the culprit to my fast moving tendon and nerve problems in my leg? I have been dodging the 5 operations they want to do on it for years. Because honestly even after all the surgeries I've had. One on that leg scare the crap out of me. Especially when they say it could go okay. Or it could paralyze my leg. Doesn't sound like a good deal to me. What do you guys think?

Sonja, do the symptoms get better when you are off the Cipro? That could help clarify whether the symptoms are side-effects. I've been on Cipro continuously for a fair number of years now. It's a trade-off, of course, but I haven't had any serious side effects, fortunately. They would have to be very serious indeed for me to prefer continence issues.

While it may be true that Cipro can have delayed effects, the vast majority of side effects will occur while on the medication. But if your breaks from Cipro are brief then they probably won't help you tell if the problems are related to Cipro or not. If you can arrange a couple of weeks off Cipro you might get better information. Have you tried other antibiotics? Have you had any non-Cipro successes?
