I was just wondering if anyone had experience with any type of nerve block for rectal pain and how effective it was or is. Or if there is any other procedures they have had done through a pain management clinic. I have been referred from my surgeon after having my takedown a year and a half ago he has slowly been tapering me off of the pain meds which is ideal to taper off of them completely but I also can't just suffer with the pain that I still have. I have a feeling this pain isn't going to get any better down the road either because since surgery it hasn't improved just actually got worse now due to an abcess that created 3 different fistulas that i've had to get setons put in and taken out. It's unfortunate but I think this is going to have to be something I'm gonna have to accept that I will have this pain for the rest of my life I'm just hoping that now I can find a way to manage it with the help of these specialists. Any information or experiences would be helpful. Thank You.

My daughter started having anal pain a few months after takedown. She also had an abscess and they thought she had a sinus tract but couldn't find it. She had dr Shen at cleveland clinic do some injections but they didn't help. She also had a nerve block in her spine and that didn't help her pain either. She then developed a prolapse and had a pouch pexy which has failed and has decided after 3 1/2 years (and 8 surgeries) she is done dealing with the jpouch and going to a permanent ostomy. She has literally lost over 3 years of her life and is ready to move on and get back to college.
I'm still taking pain medication, Norco, and had my take down 4 years ago. My Internist prescribes my pain medication as she sees me at least quarterly. My surgeon and GI's don't prescribe it as I don't see them often enough. My Mayo Clinic GI knows I am still taking it and doesn't have any concerns about it as I have a dysfunctional pouch and more importantly have bad adhesion pain. I've had 5 abdominal surgeries.

I take potential for addiction seriously and take the minimum needed to keep my pain tolerable. I would need too much medication to be pain free. I break the pills in half at times too.

My current treatment plan includes participating in Chronic Pain Group and personal therapy with manual A.R.T. treatment to break apart the adhesion/scarring. While it pains me a few days following the treatments I can tell it is working. There are several different types of medical professionals that can elect to take the additional classes necessary to become certified. I located the Chiropractor that is treating me through this website. This site describes the therapy and has a therapist finder by zip code: Active Release Techniques, A.R.T. http://www.activerelease.com/what_patients.asp

After my first appointment my provider studied about J-pouches plus she has reviewed some of my medical imaging tests. I continue to be impressed with her knowledge and work. I am the first person she has treated specifically for this problem. She has treated women who've had abdominal surgeries for other problems, like hysterectomies and c-sections. She is also working on my core. I've heard this term forever and thought it would be nice but impossible for me to do with my constant pain. I was wrong.

I don't know if you are interested in this sort of thing or not. My doctors have told me adhesion removal or braking apart surgery isn't performed unless they need to perform surgery for another problem. I don't want to have further surgery either as each time they open us up more adhesions can form.
