Ever since my takedown on January 23rd, I've been up usually 4 times a night to go to the bathroom. Normally around 11:30/midnight, 1:30/2, 3/4, 5ish. I stay at home with my toddler, and she sleeps until around 7-7:30, so I usually wake up again when she wakes up, and I go again.
I'm at my wit's end! How can I get a longer period of sleep? It's only happened once, last week, where I only had to get up once (at 2:30).
I eat dinner around 7. I've eaten both earlier and later, no difference. I eat a light dinner which normally has rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes. I've also had pig out dinners - no difference. I usually eat something sweet around 9-9:30; I tried cutting that out a couple nights, no dice.
I am taking 4 lotomil daily. I used to take 6 Imodium daily but I felt it wasn't helping, so I stopped. I used to pop a lotomil and 2 Imodium before bed - still up at least 4 times. I stopped the Imodium, no change. I stopped the lotomil before bed thinking maybe I shouldn't try to slow things down, just let it go through fast and get it over with - still up around the same times.
Last night I wasn't feeling well and only had a few bites of dinner (I did have ice cream later). I was kind of excited, thinking 'oh, I didn't eat much, maybe I'll sleep longer!' - nope!
Any fresh ideas? Is this going to get better over time?
Thanks!

I have had this problem when my cuffitis (and/or pouchitis) is flaring. Canasa suppositories for a week or so usually gets things under control. I now take the Canasa regularly, every other day to keep things relatively quiet.

Have you mentioned this to your surgeon? They can usually detect cuffitis with a digital exam.

It definitely gets better over time. I know everyone says be patient and I remember how much it sucks to be patient at the beginning!

I got up 1-2x every night for the first six months. Then one night... I slept straight through. Then back to 1-2x every night. Then a couple weeks later... another night straight through. Now I'm almost 8 mos post-takedown and I sleep straight through about 50% of the time.

Some people have tricks that help them sleep through the night. Personally I know things that make it much worse (eating a huge meal, drinking anything carbonated or other big gas producing foods, drinking a lot of alcohol), but nothing consistently makes it better.

Going frequently can be a sign of pouchitis or cuffitis, but you're also pretty early in the recovery period, so I would judge by other symptoms before jumping to conclusion (e.g. urgency, feelings of rectal pressure or incomplete emptying, rectal bleeding, pain or burning in the anal canal, abdominal cramping, fever, etc).

I had lots of urgency and control issues that have improved over the last couple weeks. I was having accidents around 3x a day, then a few weeks ago it became maybe one every other day, and now it's usually just at night, especially when I have gas.
I do sometimes feel pressure and burning, but not often anymore. Up until about a week and a half ago I had horrible butt itching and burning every morning, but I got some better creams and a perineal cleanser to use at night and it has improved very much.
Overall I feel good, if that's any indication of not having pouchitis or cuffitis, ha ha. Just so tired!
Thanks

Don't eat close to bedtime. That still helps me. Mostly I sleep thru the night, but if I'm out late, or eat late, I'm guaranteed one trip around 2-3am. But it's not my norm.

Emptying completely before bed used to help me, and still does.

Time was what helped the most, just being patient. The pouch stretches over time and holds more. I think between 6-12 months, I was sleeping thru the night most nights.

My takedown was February 13th. Things have gotten much "better" than first after takedown. But I'm still not completely happy.

I'm up 4-5 times a night as well, every 1.5 to 2 hours like clockwork. Then my alarm goes off at 5:15 am for work. Makes for some tired mornings. Even during the day I can go 1.5 to 3 hours between BM's. I've tried to work on holding it to "stretch the pouch" or make my muscles stronger but no matter how hard I try to hold it back a little bit will leak out then I have to go clean up and usually have a small BM as well.

This was my 2nd week back to work and everyday seems to be the same. Wish I could hold it all and not leak any. I've been taking medimucil and that seems to help form the stool. I was slamming Imodium as well but it didn't seem to do anything for me so I haven't taken those in a few days.

it would be nice to sleep through the night and I can deal with the day routine. Doing both are a little much at this point.
