Speaking of Paleo Diet. I made an amazing non-starbucks pumpkin frappuccino. If anyone wants the recipe it is here http://arsetopia.com/paleo-pumpkin-frappuccino/

I have been hooked on bison burgers with cashew pesto, wild boar tacos I make with gluten free tortillas, use tapioca flour and salsa verdes. BACON JAM is another staple I have around. I keep it in a jar and eat a spoon if I am eating small meals that day. High-fat is key. Coconut milk and oil is a good start.

Just to be clear: "cut out carbs" is not the same as Paleo or low FODMAPS or GAPS. "Cut out carbs" is much more straightforward, though it's hard for many people to stick with. Carbs are *all* sugars and all starches - period. What's left? Protein, fats, and most veggies (not starchy veggies, though, like potatoes, corn, or rice). So no bread, no pasta, no fruit, no sweets. Artificial sweetener is probably fine, though I'd stay away from sorbitol and mannitol. If you can stick to that diet for a few weeks (or even a month or two) perhaps you'll see results that convince you it's worth it. At that point (but not until you've seen results) you might choose to experiment with adding selected things back (e.g. low FODMAPS starches), preferably one at a time. Carbohydrates are listed on the nutrition label of any packaged food.

If you start out following one of those other diets instead, you're not actually doing what Shen suggested to *you*.

Good luck!

Thanks Scott! I'm still learning. I've cut out all grains, sugar, fruit & soy products. I'm vegan so the diet is incredibly difficult. I've been eating pureed veggies, not starchy with the exception of orange squashes, greens, peppers, etc. Also pureed cashews and almonds, and tried egg (as a vegan this was tough!) Dr. Shen understands that I am vegan so he suggested tofu and vegetables, also low fiber. Tofu seems to be hard for me to digest and soy is high FODMAP. I want to take Shen's advice, though he didn't give me much info on diet. Also, FODMAP diet was recommended to me by another practitioner so trying to put it all together. Suggestions to vegans?...vegetarians?

P.S. I have j-pouch, colectomy for colonic inertia. Presently, chronic partial obstructions, either mechanical cause or motility issue. Shen diagnosed me with SIBO and Dr. Feza Remzi suggested surgery to repair "floppy" afferent limb and "lift everything up" as I have endocele & pouchocele.

Thank you for any tips!

PuraVida, I'm not the guy to advise a vegan how to cut out carbs. I think I could put up with a no-carb diet more easily than a vegan diet, but the combination seems very difficult indeed. If you insist on low FODMAPs at the same time, you may be making things more difficult than necessary? It's also unclear how Shen feels about carbs from fiber in all this. He may simply have no data, and unfortunately is obliged to guess. If you find a diet that works for you, though, that's brilliant even if it started with a guess.

Perhaps someone else can advise how to sustain a vegan diet with these other constraints.
