Could anyone please recommend an experienced GI in NY for JPouch care? I heard a lot about Dr Bo Shen, but before going out of town I want to exhaust all options here. We have major hospitals in NYC that perform plenty of these surgeries, and I am hoping to find some expertise here. We have a wonderful surgeon here, but neither he or my son's GI can solve his issues. Time for a fresh set of eyes. I am open to NYC and Long Island areas. Any names please ? Both adult and pediatric will work.

I used to go to Thomas Ullman, who is a wonderful GI but difficult to get in to see (probably the main complaint of anyone who sees an M.D. in the city) so I now see someone in my county. As far as surgeons go, Sergey Khaitov has golden hands. Both he and Dr. Ullman affiliated with Mt. Sinai. Dr. Michael Harris moved his surgical practice to Englewood Hospital in New Jersey. He is very easy to talk to and has the ability to think outside the box. Neither the hospital nor Dr. Harris accept my insurance . Good luck, I'm sure you will get more responses soon.
Dr Ellen Scherl at Cornell.
Thank you so much for your quick replies, I will look these drs up.
Is there one well known Jpouch specialist or Jpouch center, or they are mostly IBD drs?

There are no GIs in NY that specialize in j-pouch only like Bo Shen. There might be a GI at Mayo who is also a pouch specialist but otherwise I think they are the only medical j-pouch specialists (as compared to surgical j-pouch specialists) in the country.
Dr Scherl is great and has a ton of pouch patients -- many of whom are members here -- I would definitely see her before traveling to Cleveland.

Mt Sinai hospital Dr Stephen Itzkowitz gastro I have been seeing him for 5 years A wonderful and caring person great Doctor
I saw Dr Scherl at Cornell before moving south..Excellent and caring doctor, and I highly recommend her.
However, I am now traveling to Cleveland to see Dr Shen. If you have pouch issues there is no better person to see.
Even the IBD "super specialists" in NY like Scherl and Kornbluth send their patients with pouch complications to Shen.
Good luck!

Dr. Asher Kornbluth, affiliated with Mt. Sinai. Excellent and jpouch expert.
I'm not sure about complications, but I had my two step procedure done by Dr. Harris and couldn't be happier with the experience. Id think it'd be worth consulting with him. I believe he's more insurance friendly than Dr. Kornbluthe (cash only I think), and probably has more insight into jpouch specific issues.
Unfortunately many of the top doctors in NYC are not insurance friendly. They are too busy to be bothered spending time dealing with insurance companies, and in all truth it is a hassle, as I fight with insurance companies daily to get bills paid. I paid cash for two of my surgeries with Dr. Gorfine and at that time I was basically told: "you need to deal with insurance, pay us and then we will give you the documents and you can take it up with them." It's going to be this way for any highly in demand specialist in NYC. That is simply reality. They want to be doctors, not administrators and claimants, and even their staffs are too burdened with other tasks to have to deal with insurance company nonsense.
All of the GIs at the IBD center at Cornell take insurance. Some of the surgeons (e.g. Milsom) do not take insurance but most of them do as well. I know at Mt Sinai there are some GIs who don't take insurance but a lot of them seem to be retiring.
Dr. Peter Legnani, 212 369 2490 is in the same practice as Dr Kornbluth, but Legnani does take insurance. My daughter seems Dr. Legnani.
Pluto, I thought Dr Scherl did not take insurance?
Hope you find a good doctor for your child.

She does. I think she's in network for fewer insurance co's than the other doctors in her practice, but she's in network for me.
Scherl takes my insurance also.
