Pffft. I hate advice like that.
It might indeed be true to a certain extent, but would some compassion kill anyone? Not to mention that there are options, just limits on time and resources to investigate all of them.
I had acupuncture for chronic pain in Canada. The pain was in my abdomen, off to the right side, and completely debilitating. Pain meds didn't help much and my norm was to struggle through the day on just enough pain meds to take the edge off without being high, then go to bed by 7:00 p.m. At least one day a week I couldn't get out of bed.
My family doctor suggested I try acupuncture and sent me to a doctor who had both Eastern and Western medical degrees and specialized in pain relief. My husband was astounded when, the evening of the first treatment, I was still awake and fine at 9:00 p.m.! The relief was amazing; I was able to wean off of the pain meds and go back to a mostly normal schedule. Initially I went for treatments every week, and then slowed to every other week. It was great.
The problem was finally sorted for good after I moved here and found a very proactive surgeon who went after the root cause of the pain, but the acupuncture gave me my life back in the meantime. I wouldn't hesitate to try it again.
