My surgeon had me on fiber powders to bulk up my stool. I was also taking 4-8 immodium pills a day and my stools were still loose.

I saw my GI and he said that fiber powders were not very helpful and I should take Metamucil wafers (each pack has two cracker size wafers that taste okay). Within hours of taking them, my stool was bulked up and has been since.

For anyone having liquid stools, I definitely recommend trying Metamucil wafers (if your doctor says you can have fiber and your loose stools are part of the normal recovery and not another problem).

It's probably because the Metamucil is soluble fibre and the fibre powder was insoluble fibre. When I have too much insoluble fibre without soluble fibre, even tiny specs of fibre "whisk" up my food during transit, making stools looser. Insoluble fibre helps to bind everything together. Metamucil is probably one of the best soluble fibres IMO.

Feel free to correct me if Im wrong if there are any experts out there, but this is my experience with fibre.

I take two wafers in the morning. I haven't experimented by adding two at night. My Imodium ranges from 4-8 a day depending on whether I remember to take it. TE wafers seem to do more for thickening. The Imodium seems to help decrease bathroom trips.

I suppose I should experiment and try another two wafers at night.

Have you tried the wafers before bed and would you recommend taking Imodium 30 minutes before eating the wafers ?

I'm not recommending fiber at bedtime, though I guess it might work for some. I sleep through the night just about every night, but if I start consuming food/bulk like that at bedtime I'll probably have to wake up to deal with it. Imodium (or Lomotil, in my case) works great for me at bedtime - that's the only time I commonly take it.

I found the cinnamon spice more palatable than the apple crisp flavor. These aren't gourmet cookies - my wife took to calling them "nasty biscuits." You can get them all over the place in the US - drug stores like CVS for sure, but I'd also expect to find them at places like Target and Wal-Mart. They might be less expensive on Amazon, though.

Psyllium husk is what the wafers contain. The only purpose of the wafers (or the sweetened powder) is to make the psyllium husk more palatable. Original Konsyl (or bulk psyllium husk) are low calorie (unsweetened/unflavored) alternatives. Not everyone will put up with what someone here called "my daily dose of sawdust."

I mix Konsyl with sweetened Metamucil 50:50. Shaking instead of stirring improves things considerably, by wetting every bit of the powder. That's my personal compromise.

Rebecca, the best way to find out if it's yucky to you is to try it. The cost is low, the risk is nonexistent, and the information is actually reliable if you collect it yourself. Folks here can give you great ideas you might not have thought of, but some of the "don't do this" warnings here are really too individual to broadcast as general advice.

I actually like the taste of these.  I started taking one as my breakfast at around 7AM.  Since doing this, from 7 until I leave work at 4:30PM, I only have to use the restroom once, at around 1:30PM, which is no different than a normal person.  Granted, I guess you could say I'm not eating a real breakfast, but it's made a major difference in my overall quality of life in eliminating the extra trips to the bathroom during the work day.

hi again bit of update.. i now take tablespoon two or three times a day instead of teaspoon..once use to it i find this to be better still..

and to answer your question about things changing as to working overtime the answer is absolutely..the one thing i think is consistent with pouch is its inconsistency..

just a thought but maybe the physillium husk used regularly say three times might help with leaking?it firms things up worth seeing if it is so..

 

 

I used the crackers for years, then switched to metamucil powder due to less calories. It worked well for a couple years. Now it is not holding me to much liquid I think. I switched to Konsyl it is not working either and I'm up 3-4 times a night. I think I need to find the right ratio less liquid and imodium at night. Never needed imodium for years hmmm??? Going to try the crackers again ....wish they did not have the sugar.

Konsyl (at least the original formula) is just plain psyllium husk, just like the stuff in health food stores. I have no idea which is less expensive.

I always take Lomotil before bed (it works a bit better for me than Imodium, but they are very similar). I generally sleep through the night, but it's much more reliable with Lomotil on board.
