I had takedown surgery a month ago. Recovery had been going really well until ... Went to doc for follow up and he said I should start getting fiber into my diet - he suggested fiber-rich cereal. So I had two Metamucil wafers last night before bed and shredded wheat for breakfast - it thickened my stool as advertised but my trips to the bathroom must have tripled. Long night having to get out of bed repeatedly and a long day having to go often. Everyone raves about how Metamucil slows you down but it sped me up. Anyone have any explanation or advice? Thank you.

It *does* increase the volume, but I don't think it speeds things up in my body. You might be using too much for your system or stage of recovery. Experimenting could help you figure out the best dose for you right now (which could be none). I only take it twice a day, just before meals.

And to this day I'd be wary of shredded wheat - use with caution. That much *insoluble* fiber can be murder.

I agree, it may have been too much at one time; everyone is different. Metamucil only once a day works best for me, either one serving of biscuits or one cup (dissolved powder -- if I take it with too much liquid it makes things worse). Granola is the best thickener for me, but also increases gas. Mostly I rely on a banana a day.
