I have read for a number of years, folks with jpouch saying to use less water with metamucil...I have contact metamucil company, pharmacists and doctors about this and all are perplexed with that advice...I am trying to establish where this advice came from and is it valid. The issue is concerning a choking hazard related to using not enough water/liquid with the metamucil... I am concerned about this because there are times that metamucil using the prescribed amount of liquid works efficiently and there are times, also currently when it is not working to bulk up the stools. And this makes me wonder if I did use less liquid with the metamucil, it would help to bulk the stool more. Any advice or comments appreciated. I have had jpouch for 30 years. I feel a bit embarrassed for not knowing this after so many years, but I was never originally told to use metamucil, but when it works its great, but its strange the way it has sort of stopped working recently. THANKS

There’s been some disagreement about this, and some (but definitely not all) surgeons apparently tell their patients to use less water with Metamucil. I find it works just fine with the amount of water suggested on the package, and I think withholding water is about the worst method of thickening stool a J-poucher could consider. Your stool will fluctuate with your diet, regardless of how you use Metamucil. Here’s an earlier post along those lines:
I do something different. I do not take it with a lot of water- maybe 1 heaping teaspoon in 4 ounces water- but then I wash it down with 16-20 ounces of herbal tea in a giant mug.
My objective is not to thicken stool. It's to clean out bacteria. That's the only objective that matters in my case.
I switch between using a liquid or applesauce. In liquid I use 1 heaping teaspoon in half the amount of liquid, usually Orange juice. I use the same amount in applesauce.
Never had any issues with choking, as long as you drink it right away. I have had issues with it not working. That’s why I switch it up.
