Does anyone take Mercapturine? My doc wants to start me on a low dosage of 25 mg. long term? Any thoughts or comments?

I was on mercaptapurine for 7 years because of uc. I took 50 to 75 mg per day. My gi would monitor my white blood count every 3 months. However, once I removed my colon ( august 20 and oct 18 takedown) I stopped all drugs. One of the reasons, I had surgery was to get off 6mp and Remicade. They have side effects. Why does your doctor want you on it?
Also, mercaptapurine lowers your immune system. I could never get any live vaccines.
Aah, my doctor spelled it for me over the phone. . . missed a couple of letters, I see. Wow, I don't want to take that drug if I don't have to. I just read about it online and I see there are terrible side effects, including a type of cancer. Apparently it is used for killing leukemia cancer cells . . . it's pretty heavy duty. I can only hope this doc will prescribe the VSL#3 and leave it at that. Thanks so much for the input. Sally
