I am having my second flair up in nine months and am traveling.  The last time I had one I I was in the same geographic location and like the current flair up, I wound up at the same ER with the same symptoms as before:  rectal pain, diarrhea, high fatigue, etc.  I was given the same meds as before ( tramadol & cipro) and feel much better in a relatively short time.  I have had this flair up for nearly six weeks but was unable to see my gastroenterologist until two weeks ago and then had to travel with the condition. My doctor did not prescribe meds other than Hydrocortozone and nupercanol even though the pain was intense and which prompted me to go to the ER.   I am angry with this physician beyond belief. While I am not in favor of prescribing antibiotics and pain meds on a whim,  I think my gastroenterologist is way out of line in not doing something to aid my condition.  I would appreciate input anyone would like to give Including treatment of flair ups.

Thanks,

Loujr

Every doc has his own style and comfort zone I guess. Once you find a doc you have a good rapport with, you need to stick with him. My GI is comfortable with letting me have antibiotic Rx's on file for me to use as needed. I never travel without bringing antibiotics with me. I communicate with him via email if something comes up, and I see him for a scope every year or so.

If you are not on the same page as your GI, maybe it is time to shop for a new one. You cannot make your doctor be someone else. On the other hand, he does not own you either.

I believe you're correct, Scott, this occurred to me as well.  He's a like-able person but after checking his credentials, I have my doubts about him.  I then went to the Johns Hopkins web site and viewed a lecture on flair-ups and their treatment.  As I watched it I was saying "Yes!" to myself repeatedly as the doctor spoke.  I am currently examining backgrounds of gastroenterologist in my new location and will be meeting with a couple once this rod trip is over.  Thanks for your input.
