Can Pepto Bismol cause maroon coloured stool? I've had some very dark stool this afternoon and into the evening with a maroonish tinge to it. I'm a bit concerned because other than the Pepto Bismol, I haven't eaten anything that might have caused this. I do have a bit of gas but otherwise feeling okay.

Ironically I just saw my GP a couple of weeks ago for my annual physical. I had bloodwork done at that time. The office hasn't called me so I assume everything was fine. I do have a referral to a new GI but it's going to be a few months before I can get an appointment with him, so I don't really have anyone I can contact right now.

Thanks. I've stopped the PB and I've also skipped my iron today so I can "go clear" and figure out if something is actually going on. I've had darkening of the stool with PB before but it's usually blackish or greenish; this had a definite maroon tinge. I was taking the PB in the first place because I've had some particularly bad BB this week and I find that's something that often helps.
I would tend to think the iron would darken the stool, but I have seen different colors from the PB including white. See if it continues once you stop the PB- good luck.

BTW I have in the past gotten butt burn which caused a very minor amount of rectal bleeding that passed after a few days, but usually this was actual droplet of blood and nothing mixed in with the stool.

Also, any red or maroon colored drink you consumed, if made with dyes, would lead to this kind of discoloration.
The only thing I've really been eating more of than usual is strawberries. I was given a basket of them on Thursday. But I've never had them change the stool colour before. Nothing else - no beets, licorice, red candy, nothing I can really think of.

I actually did have some bright red bleeding a few days ago with the butt burn; in fact it was a little more than usual so I wondered if I might have a hemorrhoid. My bottom was quite sore. I also wonder if this might not be connected.

Iron does darken the stool for me. It turns it black temporarily, which is why I skipped it yesterday. I want to see what's going on and I don't want the iron to potentially mask anything.

Anyway, I'll see how things go over the next couple of days. I really hope this is nothing.
How about icing with dye, gatoraide, candy, donuts with frosting those get me. Whenever I have anything with like blue, green or purple dye it scares the crap out of me (no pun intended). Icing gets me the WORST. Purple gatoraide caused an anxiety attack for me once before I realized what was going on lol. In my experience, it's pretty common to see crazy colors if you've had anything with a color dye in it. Just keep an eye on it.
Could be a fissure. If you get fresh red blood when you wipe, and have a searing pain while going, that could be a fissure. I have chronic fissures, but when one "opens up" it will bleed a little at first. They can also lead to spasms, so if when you go, it is skinny as a pencil, this could be what is happening.
Thanks everyone. I definitely haven't eaten anything with red dye. Believe me, I've had all the "colour scares" since takedown and I've pretty much learned which foods tend to cause changes. Like most people who have UC, I've unfortunately become something of a chronic poop-looker. *LOL* But I can't pinpoint anything I've eaten this week, other than Pepto and strawberries.

Yes I did have bright red blood last week, and a little more than just irritation. I'm thinking hemorrhoid because I don't think I have enough pain for it to be a fissure, but that's something to rule out too. I'm also wondering if it was related; perhaps some of the blood mixed in with the stool, which was already darkened from the Pepto, hence the strange colour.

Anyway, the stool has been more of a normal colour since yesterday, but I'm still keeping a very close eye on things.
I don't want to jinx it, but I've had a pretty much normal coloured stool since stopping the Pepto. I have also skipped my iron since Sunday so that it wouldn't mask anything, but considering that things have been going ok the past 2 days, I think I will introduce it back with dinner today. I am still keeping a very close eye on it. The reason the maroon coloured alarmed me so much is that it was very similar to the colour my stool was when I had UC. Anyway, will continue to keep my fingers crossed.
