I had my j pouch takedown in June 2013 and recently have been diagnosed with iron deficiency. My serum ferritin level is 3(normal is 30-300) and my haemoglobin is 10. For the past few weeks I have felt generally weak/fatigued with very low energy levels. My Doc tried me on iron tablets which were disastrous for my guts and so now I await an appointment with my Gi Doctor to consider iron infusions. My question is, is this a common problem with j pouches? I struggle to eat green/fibrous veg due to difficulties in passing such through my anus, which is very narrow and constricted. when i pass something the size of a pea it feels like a bowling ball!
Any advice or other people's experiences of this would be much appreciated.

I am also anemic and get IV ferraHeme every 4-6 months from a hemotologist. When my ferritin starts going down, it's usually time to get another infusion. I usually get a blood test every 3-4 months to keep on top of the ferritin levels. My anemia showed up one year after my BCIR surgery. Pills gave me terrible cramps.
The ferraheme is a "push" IV, takes about 15 minutes since they give saline with it. The recommended dose is 2 treatments one week apart.
Your ferritin level sounds very low, my dr. Does not like mine to go below 100.
Good luck and i hope you feel better. The tiredness i felt with anemia is unlike any other and hard to explain to those not experiencing it.
