I been taking imodium since my jpouch was completed which was Oct 2016....I take 2 a day....for the last two months been feeling exhausted, dizzy, fatigued and no appetite a lot... I been to the er twice within the two months only to tell me everything was great... Imodium is the only thing I take ....I'm now convinced that its causing me these problems I'm having....Are there any other alternatives for imodium...an has anyone ever had any problems taking imodium long term?

It would be unusual for a medication like Imodium to be fine for 16 months and then suddenly cause the problems you’re describing. I prefer Lomotil to Imodium, in any case. There are other alternatives, but those are best reserved for when Imodium and Lomotil are insufficient. Soluble fiber (like Metamucil) bulks up the stool rather than slowing the bowel, but for some folks it could reduce the need for bowel slower like Imodium.

I suggest you work with a good internist to try to identify possible causes of your symptoms. You may have an infection, or sleep apnea, or a metabolic disorder, or goodness knows what. The ER has no chance of going through this diagnostic challenge successfully.

The symptoms described are very much what I went through during episodes of dehydration and the only substance administered that made one hell of a difference was saline IV fluids.

My fluid output (pee) is never less than 3 times per day and is either completely clear or golden in colour, yet the symtoms of dehydration can still occur.

When I increase my salt intake, the feeling of fatigue and lack of enthusiasm appears to lift without even realising, that is, until I think about it sometime later.

Regardless of the blood results in the ER, I believe, you're either dehydrated or maybe hydrated but lacking potassium.

I used to take 3 imodium per day for 6 months. The result was 2 bowl obstructions. I stopped taking imodium and never had any obstructions since.

I also noticed that my body is getting accustomed to the imodium over time and it's effect was slowly disappearing.

My advice - cut back on imodium. Use it rarely and only when there is a clear need.
