Hey guys, Im about 5 weeks out from my second surgery of the three and things have definitely improved since I last posted. I am having some issues keeping hydrated tho as my output is very watery. My surgeon keeps telling me to just drink sugary drinks but I'm wondering surely that will have a damaging effect on my teeth? So my question is what fluids do you recommend with a loop illeostomy as I'm barely drinking water now ? Is this good ? The doc says water will go straight through and make the output more liquid. , will this be the same after the third op as before I used to drink a lot of water and not much sugary drinks.
Many thanks

Mmmmm I think sugary drinks would make it worse. The loop is notorious for high volume liquid output. I just drank water while I had mine. There are other sports drinks that don't have a lot of sugar. I can't recall names right now...maybe try googling some. I know Pedialyte is low in sugar. My belief is water is always the best. I don't agree with your doc.
I didn't watch with my loop ileostomy, and drank all sorts of stuff, but mostly water worked for me. I had a great appetite, and my diet was enough for nutrients, etc.

Yeah, the transit time for things like soda is FAST with a loop ileostomy. I remember sitting on the toilet, bag open, with an orange pop, and marveling that I'd take a drink, and count to 10, and it would come flying out of me! FAST.
I agree with everyone else. Sugar just pulls more water into the bowel contributing to very watery output. Drinks without sugar like G2 are great. There are lots of recipes on line for electrolyte replacement drinks that are sugar free. G2 can get a bit expensive.
Now go get yourself a glass of something and drink, drink, drink.
