Hi all!  Does anyone in the Pacific Northwest have an excellent surgeon?  I live in Portland, Oregon and my surgeon retired a while ago.  I haven't had issues that require a surgeon's assistance in a long time, but the replacement I've ended up with, I'm not happy with for several reasons and if something did happen, I don't have confidence in him.

I'm willing to travel, if needed.

Thanks!

Have you considered getting a gastroenterologist? I have not seen my GI surgeon in over 20 years. I am completely happy with my gastroenterologist for ongoing care. Once you have recovered from surgery, you really do not *need* a surgeon.

I do have a gastroenterologist.  For some issues, GI refers to colorectal surgeons, especially for functional problems, like what I'm dealing with.  GI will deal with diseases of the pouch, but when it comes to catheterizing and not being able to empty, they refer out to the surgeons.  So I really do actually need a surgeon.

Makes sense. If you are unable to empty and are resorting to using a catheter, this may be a structural issue. I would enquire about some advanced imaging, such as defagraphy, to see if you have a pouch prolapse or collapse when you bear down. This defect would not be evident during a scope. That is something that is a surgical issue. Your GI can order this.

The Portland area should have some qualified surgeons. I know we have some members up that way. You might want to do a search for posts in your area and see if they mention their provider or facility.
