Hi all.

I'm planning on having step 2 of a 3 step j-pouch sometime soon, but it's been a while since the first step, about 15 years in fact. I had emergency surgery when I was younger to remove the large bowel because of toxic megacolon due to indeterminate colitis (now diagnosed as UC) and had a "temporary" ileostomy put in place. Since then I haven't really had the urge to have more surgery but I've decided the time is right, and the surgeon feels it's important to remove the last piece of diseased rectum, before something nasty happens.

Anyway, anyone here had a long gap between these steps? If so, what kind of preparation did you do before surgery? Exercise, diet, vitamins/supplements? Other preparation? I've been fairly healthy for years and am now in my late thirties, but I want to be 100% before I get in there - any tips? I've read all the usual websites, but just wondering if someone has a similar time between steps.

15 years? I'd start doing kegel exercises...yesterday! Weakness of the rectal sphincters is likely to be your biggest challenge after so many years of minimal use.

Other than that, your adaptation should be the same as anyone's and you don't need any special preparation that is different than any other major surgery.

Good luck!
