Liquid stools are so confusing to me. I never know what harm they cause other than dehydration and butt burn. When I eat stuff with sugar I tend to have loose stools for a day or two, depending on how much I ate. I don’t have increased frequency or anything, just liquid. Is this normal for everyone? My surgeon told me I should avoid liquid stools as much as possible but so many people here have said they prefer them. Personally, I only see a problem with them if I don’t hydrate well. When I eat well I have like applesaucy (gross sorry) textured stools which is what I prefer. Anyways, my overall question is are liquid stools every once in a while normal and OK and does everyone get them? Thanks!

Liquid stools that burn are a problem. Liquid stools that cause leaking are a problem. Chronic liquid stools that dehydrate are a problem.
That said, I have liquid stools much of the time, but not all the time. It does not burn and I do not leak or have urgency. So, the consistency of your stools is less important than how you feel. Focus on that.

I have not had a solid BM since my j-pouch was installed. My body copes very well and I have never (fingers crossed) had an issue with dehydration. Occasionally have small leaks at night all dependant on what I have eaten for dinner.

Hi Jaypea,
What foods do you find cause small leakages at night? And, how do you stay hydrated albeit constant loose stools?
I eat no carb, no sugar so if I have lots of veggies with oil I’m almost guaranteed a little leak. Depends to the rescue. My body has adapted well and I drink about 2 litres of water a day. No issues at all.
