I heard Lexapro makes you gain weight as a side effect? if so i will take that one. I need to gain weight really bad. I know Lexapro is generic now as of recently, is Zoloft as well? money is tight, so i need it to be cheap as possible. thanks for any suggestions you can give me. Confused

I have been on 10 mg Lexapro generic for several months and I have felt better since I've been on it. I'm not really sure about the gaining weight side effect cause I've been eating pretty much the same, maybe a little more sweets, but I've been doing alot of bike riding also. I was having a increase in minor migraines, but that has leveled off. Really don't have any other side effects except maybe some weird dreams at night.
Zoloft and Wellbutrin did nothing for me and I did gain a lot of weight. Celexa, generic citalopram, worked very well for me without any side effects. You may have to try a few different meds before you find the one that fits your needs.

I highly recommend cognitive behavioral therapy over talk therapy to go along with any meds. Learning coping behaviors, identifying depression triggers and recognizing the depression filters we develop all helped make me feel much better.

It has been many years since I stopped therapy and more than a year since I stopped the Celexa.

There are a lot of upsetting things in my life such as an unemployed husband, constant pain, dying parent, and not being able to eat solid foods but I am not depressed. There are times I feel sad, frustrated or overwhelmed but I am not stuck in the depression rut. CBT works for the long term. I could not have dealt with my current situation without learning all that I did.

Full disclosure: I still have ptsd from things that happened as a young child but it only comes out when I start thinking I might have to see a gi. Our brains make such weird connections!

I am very proud of you for reaching out for help. Your life will get better.
I was on Bupropion (Wellbrutren) before and it was a time released coated pill. After the surgeries we switched to tablets that I take several times a day and they are cheap. My Internist put me on Citalopram as well. She has increased the dose gradually. I take it several times a day too - no time released. I also was on alprazolam (xanex) and still take it as needed for anxiety.

I'm also in CBT and am diagnosed with depression, anxiety and PTSD. I too have other traumatic events, to say the least, that have come out in theraphy.

I've heard all antidepressants make us gain weight but nothing like our bad friend, prednisone.

If your doctor wants to put you on a new drug it will cost more so make sure you try one that is tried and true, comes in generic and is not time released. Newer drugs cost more plus do not have the benefit of being out on the market as long. That's my thinking as the more people use them the more evidence of it's side effects.
Are those your only options? Ask your doctor for samples of the one they want to put you on. It takes a couple of weeks to notice if it is working or not. Sometimes doctors put people on samples they have and don't know how expensive the prescriptions are. Happened to me once and when I told the doctor she prescribed me something else just as good but available in generic.

I'd also ask the pharmacy how much each costs. Plus ask if Citalopram is recommended. I think it's the generic of celexa. It is inexpensive.
It's important to know that not all antidepressants are the same. They are targeted for specific symptoms of depression. Your doctor probably noted what your symptoms were and picked the top two drugs that would target those areas.

I've never heard that generics are less effective. Just like this webpage, you cannot believe everything you read. I would go ahead and take one or the other and see how you do. You should know within 3 weeks if it's working or not.

I also agree that you should be engaging in some type of therapy. Cognitive would be an excellent choice, but connecting to a therapist is most vital.

My advice on taking pills. If the pill is for say 10mg to start, try 5mg instead and work your way up if you an tolerate it. Sometimes taking 5mg prevented me going to the ER. If I took a full dose of Lexapro I would have ended up in the hospital since it picked up the same effects that Cymbalta put me in there for. Zoloft for me caused my throat to close, that type of allergic reaction. I just always start with a sliver of a pill.
I second vanessa's pill taking approach. I almost always do that with any medication as I often end up with terrible side effects some of which have landed me in an ER.
and poucho.. a little drowsiness could be a good thing. Your physical body probably could use some good rest after what you've been through the last week.
hang in there.
It's all an experiment. Unless it makes you physically ill then I take as directed for the first 2 weeks. Some are not in pill form and you can't cut in half. I thought most came in lower doses to start? I don't remember as I've tried so many since I received my fibromyalgia diagnosis in 1997 or 8. I'm on 2 different kinds now that work.

Hopefully this one will work Pouchomarx.

I was on lexapro 10mg for two years during my surgeries, helped alot and I gained weight.when I decided to come off it I went cold Turkey and had amazing light headedness  for up to three weeks.but that was three months ago and feel alot better now.I know of a person who was on 40mg.It says on the box not to stop taking it and best to see your doctor first.
