Because my father lives next door to me, has IBS, and is watching his lactose, and because I cook meals at my place for him on the weekends, I have been buying lactose free ice creams lately. In making these purchases one must distinguish between the Non Dairy Ice Creams on the market, which are typically made from Almond Milk, and the genuine Lactose Free Cow's Milk Ice Creams.
A good example of the former is Ben and Jerry's, which is making a line of Non Dairy Ice Creams with almond milk. These are not low in calories or sugar:
It's a good product but if you think you are doing anything to cut calories as well as lactose, forget it. You are just losing the lactose.
The more interesting choice is Rebel, which is sold at Big Y, and has no sugar or lactose, but full fat, and is 180 calories per 2/3 cup as opposed to 320 for Ben and Jerry. This is mainly because the product uses a natural sweetener called erythitol- a sugar alcohol, no sugar, no lactose and full fat. I have tried several of the flavors and like the Salted Caramel the best. I did not like the Mint Chip or Cookie Dough as much, although normally I like all 3 of those flavors.
What are your picks for non-dairy and lactose free ice creams?
