Has anyone taken Keflex for pouchitis? Saw my GP 2 days ago with symptoms of pouchitis and was prescribed it. I know antibiotics are supposed to work within 24-48 hours but I'm not seeing much improvement. If you took it, how long did it take to work for you.

Why Keflex? This is not usually prescribed for pouchitis. It is more for respiratory, wound, or urinary tract infections Have you already tried Flagyl or Cipro? Those are typically prescribed. If no response in three days call back And ask about what is routinely prescribed. The wrong antibiotic could actually make it worse.

Oh, OK that makes sense. How about Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate)? It worked pretty well for my pouchitis (was prescribed for a sinus infection, but my pouchitis went into remission with it).
I agree that not interrupting lactation should be a priority.

Augmentin and Cipro are both labeled "probably safe" during breastfeeding. I don't know if you'll find that comforting or not.
This need not be all or nothing. You could reduce breastfeeding to 50% of feedings (for example) while taking Cipro, which would reduce any potential issues.
I have done cipro in combination with keflex and it worked wonders and got me back to a great weight.
Keflex is a second tier antibiotic for pouchitis. First tier is cipro, flagyl, xifaxin and augmentin. You could use Levacquin as the "5th starter" in the rotation - but never before or after cipro which is in the same family. That would be the starting rotation, to use a baseball analogy. Also to use a baseball analogy, Keflex is in the bullpen, towards the end.
