Bill, I think the point your doc was trying to make is that now that there is no colon, you should not try to slow things down and thicken stools too much in an effort to simulate a function of a colon/rectum. The small bowel does not stretch like the colon and does not have the muscles of the rectum for emptying. If you slow things down too much and use too much fiber, you may be courting obstructions. Granted, a twisted bowel can just happen and hopefully, they took care of any problematic adhesions during your surgery.
The goal is to keep things moving, but not have urgency or a frequency that interferes with your life. I generally have loose stools (not liquid) and have no issues with urgency, continence or lifestyle.
However, your GI not showing concern with bloody stools is an issue. Sounds like communication was not good. Either she was not listening, or you weren't clear enough. Although, it seems odd that she did not want more details if you weren't clear enough. I definitely would be having a conversation with her about this if she were my doc.
