I have recently joined Team Challenge, a marathon training team for CCFA (Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America). I will be competing in my first 1/2 marathon in Las Vegas on Dec. 2, 2012 to raise funds for a Crohn’s and Colitis cure and provide resources that improve the quality of life for everyone with these diseases.

As many of you know, I have spent more than half of my life fighting ulcerative colitis. I was lucky to have an extraordinary colorectal surgeon remove my perforated colon and create a j-pouch after an almost fatal attack of ulcerative colitis. It is still an uphill battle to try and live a normal life. We are now facing the possibility that our youngest son has ulcerative colitis.

When this opportunity came along, I was inspired to accept the racing and fundraising challenge in spite of the fact that I was not a runner. It is my way of doing something for our son and every other person with Crohn’s and Colitis.

Through careful stewardship, CCFA makes sure that 83 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to research and invaluable support programs for IBD patients. Please help us reach our fundraising goals by donating at http://www.active.com/donate/nwpLV12/tcCThayer All donations are tax-deductible.

Ice packs and encouragement are also very welcome!

So far there are five of us from around the country planning to get together during the week-end. If you would like to join us, please send me a private message. It is going to be a fantastic experience!

Good luck! I have done the race the past two years in honor of my daughter, who suffered so much from colitis until her j pouch surgery, as well as my mother and sister who have chron's. You will a great time- it is very inspiring to see people who have lived with these diseases go out and run! You will be joined by thousands of others who have been through similar struggles. Enjoy!
