I just want to chime in here with another J-pouch success story (since they seem to be few and far in between).

I was 53yo when I had my surgeries (long time UC sufferer) and I remember when I had my temporary ostomy bag that it wasn't so bad. In fact, it was kinda convenient at times. It really didn't hamper my quality of life and I was still able to lead an active life (hiking, SCUBA diving, wakeboarding, etc). I was so concerned about possible complications during the J-pouch surgery that I told my surgeon that I was thinking about not going forward with the J-pouch. He bluntly told me it would be a mistake to keep the bag and not proceed with the J-pouch. He reasoning was that I was young, in good health, and basically a good candidate for the pouch construction. I'm so glad I went forward with the pouch. Next week I turn 61 and going forward with the pouch has been one of my best life decisions (knocking on wood). I eat normally, no diet restrictions, no meds, and have roughly 4-5 BM/day. Initially, post surgery, there were issues with severe rectal irritation (I remember literally banging my head against the bathroom wall to divert the pain), but that was eventually resolved with ointments, a bidet, and time. Only issues so far have been two partial blockages, one last year and one a couple of months ago. I just need to keep hydrated and remember to chew my food really well.  For those on the fence about having the surgery...my vote is definitely go for it.

Thank-you for doing this!!! Congratulations too! I wish more people would write about their success stories too! I plan on posting my 10 year review in October, its pretty long though lol.

Do you celebrate your surgery anniversaries??? I always celebrate step 1 and step 2.

What ointment do you use??? I use Calmospetine.

Do you use wipes too along with the Bidet???

About the Blockage thing: Drinking water before, during, and after every meal has helped me tremendously in preventing blockages and constipation. Just a little tip for you

Glad to hear success stories. Had j pouch created feb 2024 takedown July 9th 2024. Definitely having the issue of burning and pain going to bathroom. Ointments help but I also have anal fissure (since 2011) and it is definitely giving me problems. It has improved but still very painful. Use calmaseptine and have travel bidet. Any other suggestions?

Do you use wipes when you are away from home home??? Or do you use TP???

Equate fragrance free.

Oh excellent!!! Just a fyi, the wipes are more cheaper at Target especially if you sign up with their 5% off credit card! I saved a shitload of money with them.

It looks like you are doing everything right in regards to anal care. From everything I have read, it looks like anal fissures are a symptom of Crohns disease, but also having diarrhea can cause anal fissures too. I would talk to the Surgeon or your gastro and tell them the issues you are having. I am sorry you are going through that though. I will also keep you in my prayers.

Thanks mine actually came from UC for over 30 years at the time it developed and have specialized ointment for it. It is chronic but was able to control it mostly but the frequency is what has it active again. I guess it's a matter of time for body to adjust.

Oh so people with UC can get anal fissures, I thought that was right but most people said it was a Crohns thing. I love this site because I learn so much from it! And I also read that diarrhea can cause anal fissures too.

Yeah your right about the adjustment part too. Our bodies can adapt to anything, that is what makes us different than trees. Trees cannot adapt to anything but we can. I hope your anal fissures heal up hon, I know it must be painful

That's awesome. We need more positive testimony on here.

When I was going through the bad times I was searching desperately for success stories. And when I found them I would sometimes read them several times to keep reminding myself there was light at the end of the tunnel.

I do that too with other things. You never had pouchitis right???

Exactly!  I totally understand, but seems we post primarily when we have an issue.  If everything is going fine, you're living your life so why bother to post up about it.  New J-pouchers, or people contemplating about getting one, come on forums like this one and see all these issues that we're going through and see a lopsided view.

Early on, I remember reading about a J-pouch guy that just scaled Mt. Everest...he made it seem like it was no big deal, actually made jokes about his pouch, and made me think "if he can do it, so can I".

In the beginning when I was first on the site it was very discouraging because 99% of the people posting were talking about problems they had. But after talking with a few people and them telling me that most people who are doing good aren't on this site anymore. That made sense to me.

But yes as far as being healthy and enjoying life I am doing great. I work out every day. I'm actually doing a 5k marathon with my son next month.

Agree with everything you said. Even ostomates climb
